Recommended Camera PlacementUpdated 14 days ago
We're excited to help you get the most out of your device. Proper camera placement is key to experiencing the best performance from your camera's motion sensor. Let's go through some best practices for mounting in different scenarios.
General Placement Tips:
- Height Matters: Mount your camera 6 feet or higher above the ground. This elevation gives you a great vantage point!
- Angle It Down: Tilt your camera slightly downward. A 15-degree tilt helps capture more infrared light at night, improving your nighttime photos.
- Antenna Up: Don't forget to lift that antenna for the best signal strength.
- Motion Detection Range:Place your camera within its motion detection range. This ensures you won't miss any action!
- RangeCam & Mini: 65 feet motion trigger distance.
- ReachCam: 75 feet motion trigger distance.
- EdgeCam: 90 feet motion trigger distance.
- Avoid False Motion Triggers: place the camera so that tree branches and brush are not directly in front of the camera lens.
Capturing Vehicles:
Instead of a head-on or parallel view, angle your camera towards the road at about 45 degrees. This increases the time a vehicle spends in front of the lens, giving you the best shot at capturing those license plates!
Positioning Your Camera
Center your area of interest in front of the camera lens, minimizing unnecessary landscape or objects. While positioning your camera, check the display or transmitted images on your phone to ensure you're framing all essential elements. For example, if you're using the camera for home security, try to capture as much of your property line as possible without too much sky or ground in the shot. Who knows, you might even catch an owl in flight like one of our lucky customers did!
Mounting Surface
It is important to mount your camera to a stable surface that isn't affected by strong wind or animals. We recommend wooden posts or metal poles, walls, or mature trees with trunks at least 20 inches in diameter as a moving surface will cause unwanted camera triggers. Ensure the mount is firmly attached and all tension screws and straps are tightly secured. Mounting the camera out of reach of wildlife or livestock not only will help the camera perform at its best, but will also reduce potential for damage.
Dealing With Foliage & Brush
Keep the area in front of your camera clear. Trim any grass, branches, or leaves within a few feet of the lens. Remember, your device triggers on movement, so swaying plants can cause unwanted captures.
Camera Interference
Like any other communications device, your camera may be susceptible to undesired performance if sources of interference are nearby. This includes high energy power lines, generators, electric motors, high energy antennas, and metal roofing. We recommend mounting your camera away from these sources, however, if your camera must be in close proximity then you may mount the antenna further away by using an extension cable.
